Acne Guide Basics: What Causes Acne?Acne is a skin disorder, which is made up of a hair follicle i.e. a hair and sebaceous gland. These are present everywhere on the body except on the top of the feet, palms, the lower lip and soles. Sebaceous glands are known for producing an oily substance called sebum, which is responsible for providing moisture to the skin. Acne appears when more sebum is produced under the influence of hormones referred to as androgens. It commonly occurs in people between the age of 15 and 20.Adults can also face this problem.
Oil glands are deeply located in the skin. Each gland is connected to a small canal that contains a hair. This canal is termed as a follicle. The glands produce sebum that flows to the skin surface to lubricate the hair follicles. The opening of the canal with the hair follicle is the skin pore. Hormones called androgens promote the production of oil-by-oil glands. When excess of oil is produced these oil glands enlarge in size leading to acne and other skin problems. During puberty and times of stress there is increased secretion of hormones resulting in over production of oil glands.
Adolescents are more likely to have acne problems. Statistics reveal that heredity may be a major contributing factor for acne. A heredity of acne means that there is some genetic basis for the condition. Even stress can be a factor responsible for acne. Consult your family doctor on ways to reduce levels of stress. These may include recreational breaks, exercise, meditation, laughter, good sleeping habits, reduced intake of stimulants such as caffeine and social support network.
