Detoxifying Herbs and Supplements to Cure Acne
Acne is a common skin disorder characterized by occasional appearance of blackheads, pustules and pimples. Most often pimples develop on the neck, back and the upper chest. When the liver becomes sluggish release of toxins from the body gets difficult. These toxins end up entering into the blood stream leading to skin problems like acne.
Some of the factors that cause acne are:-
- Insufficient intake of vegetables, water and fiber, being overweight,
- High intake of foodstuff such as caffeine, chocolate, milk products, carbonated beverages, seafood, use of birth control pills, lithium and steroids and other food rich in iodine content.
Certain herbs that work on improving liver function are useful for treating acne as well.
Some of the major herbs for acne include Burdock, Red Clover, Sarsaparilla, Dandelion Root and Yellow Dock.
- Burdock is an herb that purifies blood and boosts immunity. It is a mild, natural diuretic and a traditional liver tonic. It is often used for dry, scaly skin. You can take it in either capsule form or make a tea out of it. If acne is related to your menstrual cycle then it is advisable to drink 2-3 cups a day for 1 week before your period. Burdock root tincture may also be used.
- Yellow dock is another herb that is effective in purifying blood stream. But if you have kidney stones, then don’t take yellow dock.
- Dandelion is the best remedy for an ailing river. It relieves constipation and eases swelling. Due to its positive effects on liver, it is suitable for acne prevention.
- Red clover is an herb that is advised for chronic conditions of the skin. Non-fermented red clover is safer to use. It contains a substance known as gem interim, which has anticancer properties. Echinacea sap is another herb that is useful in the treatment of acne.
- Basil is also considered to be having excellent anti bacterial properties. It is popular for providing relief in inflamed throat conditions.

- Sandalwood is a plant that imparts unblemished look and smoothness to the skin.
- Aloe gel has astringent properties. Calendula promotes tissue repair and growth.
- Tea tree oil is an effective antiseptic used to soothe redness.
- Golden seal is an ant microbial that prevents oozing.
- Milk Thistle is the most widely used herb for strengthening liver and cleansing.
- Herbal remedies traditionally used in China include honeysuckle flower and cilium seed.
- Supplements of nutrients such as Zinc, vitamin A or beta-carotene, essential fatty acids, Chromium and Vitamin B complex are also recommended.
